St Donat's Castle

Overlooking the Bristol Channel, in the south of Wales, St Donat's Castle is a medieval castle gently transformed into a house over the centuries. Its history merges with that of a single family, the Stradlings, who held it for nearly five hundred years and made it a home of Welsh Renaissance culture.

The stronghold of the Stradlings

St Donat's was, from the Middle Ages, the seat of the Stradling family, one of the oldest lines of the Glamorgan gentry. Unlike so many castles that changed hands endlessly, it stayed with the Stradlings from generation to generation, which allowed it to evolve without rupture: the old concentric fortress, with its curtain walls and inner court, was gradually given comfortable lodgings, wider windows, terraced gardens running down to the sea. In the sixteenth century the house combined the solidity of the castle and the pleasantness of the Renaissance home.

A home of Welsh culture

The Stradlings were a cultivated and lettered family, engaged in the intellectual life of their time. Sir Edward Stradling, in the sixteenth century, gathered a rich library, patronised Welsh studies and contributed to the efforts to fix the language and history of the country — a precious patronage at a time when Welsh culture, threatened by anglicisation, sought to preserve itself. St Donat's was thus, by the sea, a small home of the Welsh Renaissance, where the old nobility of the country combined loyalty to its roots and openness to the new learning. The castle keeps the memory of this rare continuity — one family, one place, five centuries.

What to see

  • The medieval concentric castle, curtain walls and inner court.
  • The lodgings and windows added over the Renaissance.
  • The terraced gardens running down to the Bristol Channel.
  • The memory of the Stradling family and its Welsh patronage.

Did you know?

St Donat's knew a spectacular second life in the twentieth century: the American press magnate William Randolph Hearst bought it in the 1920s and had whole elements of old buildings (ceilings, chimneypieces, panelling) transported there, from England and elsewhere, to enrich it — at the risk of blurring its history. Today the castle houses an international college. But beneath the additions remains the old stronghold of the Stradlings, one of the few Welsh castles lived in without interruption since the Middle Ages.

Practical information

St Donat's Castle lies in the Vale of Glamorgan, in the south of Wales, by the Bristol Channel. It today houses an educational establishment (Atlantic College) and a cultural centre; public access is therefore limited and takes place at events or organised visits. It is best to check the access arrangements against the official sources.
