St Mawes Castle

Facing Pendennis, guarding the other bank of the Fal estuary, St Mawes Castle is one of the most elegant artillery forts of Henry VIII. Its clover-leaf plan and its carved decoration make it a work of art as much as a war machine — and a monument to the glory of the king who had it built.

A clover-shaped fort

Built from 1540 to 1542, twin of Pendennis in the Device programme, St Mawes defended the anchorage of Carrick Roads by crossed fire with its counterpart. Its plan adopts a clover-leaf form: a four-storey central tower, surrounded by three circular bastions, originally armed with nineteen pieces. The work was directed by Thomas Treffry, clerk of works appointed by the Lord Admiral Russell. The Vyvyan family then held the command for several generations, following the custom of entrusting forts to the local gentry.

A monument to the glory of the king

St Mawes stands out for its decorative richness, rare for a military work: its central tower bears sculptures — sea monsters, gargoyles — and above all carved Latin mottoes to the glory of Henry VIII, celebrating the king as protector of the realm. This fort was not just a battery: it was also a political declaration of stone, asserting the power and legitimacy of the sovereign at the entrance of one of the great ports of the south-west. To see: the central tower with its sixteenth-century carved decoration (sea monsters, gargoyles), the gun platforms and bastions, the blockhouse at the water's edge, the carved Latin mottoes.

Did you know?

Unlike its austere twins, St Mawes adorns itself with flowers of rhetoric: its stone bears Latin inscriptions celebrating Henry VIII and his son Edward. A war fort thus became a page of carved propaganda — reminding anyone who entered the port who was the master of the realm and its coasts.
