Dartmouth Castle

At the mouth of the Dart, in Devon, Dartmouth Castle guards the entrance of a prosperous harbour of merchants and mariners. Its artillery tower holds a remarkable title: it is the oldest coastal fort in Britain built specifically for the cannon — an innovation earlier even than Henry VIII's great forts.

A gun tower before its time

The artillery tower of Dartmouth was financed by Henry VII, the first of the Tudors, who granted £150 over five years (1481-1495) for its completion. It is, according to historians, 'the oldest known purpose-built coastal artillery fort in Britain': a stone tower designed from the outset to receive cannon and defend a harbour. Its most spectacular device was a barrier chain stretched across the estuary, able physically to block the entry of enemy ships — an ingenious combination of mechanics and artillery.

A lock strengthened reign by reign

Dartmouth remained an essential link of the south-west's defence, strengthened as the threats came. Under Henry VIII, the stronghold was consolidated against the French danger (1543-44); in Elizabethan times, the fear of the Armada and then of a new Spanish invasion led to improving the tower (1597). In 1599, a Spanish spy, Hortensio Spinola, assessed the defence at '24 pieces and 50 men' and judged the inhabitants 'warlike' — an involuntary tribute to the harbour's vigilance. To see: the three-level stone gun tower (chain mechanisms), the church of St Petrox built into the walls, the Old Battery.

Did you know?

Dartmouth defended itself with a chain: stretched across the estuary from the tower, it could physically bar the way to enemy ships, which then found themselves immobilised under the fire of the guns. This combination — a chain to stop, cannon to strike — made this harbour one of the best-guarded in England, two centuries before the great modern fortresses.
